This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As the old saying goes, "A picture is worth a thousand words." This certainly holds true in our kindergarten classroom. Kids today are growing up in a digital age, so why not use that technology to hook them into learning?

I have the honor and privilege of teaching a roomful of bright, energetic, and creative five-year-olds.

Our class is located on the outskirts of a large city in central California. The children come from varied backgrounds including military families, foster families, single families, as well as traditional nuclear families. The children all speak English at school; however, at home many of my students speak either Spanish, Punjabi, or Vietnamese. Our diverse backgrounds allow us a rich sense of culture. We are all united in our desire to learn new things. We all know that education is the key to a bright future!

My Project

Rather than hand out a worksheet to complete, I would like my children to explore the world around them! There are MANY opportunities to use a digital camera to capture real-life examples of concepts we learn in our kindergarten classroom. For example, a team of kindergarten students armed with digital cameras can explore our school campus for letters, take pictures, and return to class. These photos can easily be uploaded to our computer and displayed on our whiteboard, where the kids will be able to identify the letters as they are displayed. To take the activity even further, these photos can then be printed and assembled into books the kids can share with their families. Reinforcing the link between home and school, and offering numerous opportunities to practice skills! Imagine the kids taking the cameras to capture examples of shapes, or snapping pictures of various jobs in our community, or of numbers. The possibles are endless!

We have the creative spark to bring education beyond the traditional paper and pencil projects of the past.

We know the children are growing up in a world where information comes at them faster than many of us could have ever imagined! All we need is your donation to bring these cameras into our kindergarten classroom, and in the hands of some amazing kids. Will YOU help?
