Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Science for elementary school children should be filled with fun, hands on experiments. Unfortunately, Science for my students has become boring and frustrating. Help make Science come to life for the students!

Students in my classroom are curious about the world around them.

They remind me of a sponge, aching to soak up new knowledge. Unfortunately, opportunities for my students are very limited. Supplies and materials, especially for Science, are out of date and do not meet the new standards for our states curriculum. Our school is located in a low-income neighborhood where 87% of our students participate in the free/reduced school lunch program. More than 75% of the students are of a minority, with 15% labeled as non-English speaking. Many of my students lack the support of family/guardians and rely solely on the adults at school to shape and mold them into successful students. However, these challenges do not get my students down. They greet me every morning happy to have a safe, secure environment to come to and are very eager to learn.

My Project

With the weather and water cycle materials that I have requested, Science can come to life for these students! They will be able to engage in hands on experimentation. These explorations will allow them to see and use weather tools, weather forecasting and the process of the water cycle in action, not just read about it in their Science book. Students will learn how air temperature, barometric pressure, humidity, wind speed, wind direction, and precipitation determine weather in a particular place and time. They will also recognize how weather related differences, such as temperature and humidity, are found among different environments. Finally, students will learn and be able to explain the different parts of the water cycle. These materials will allow for hands on discovery and learning, which in turn, will help foster a love of learning for our students.

With the materials requested, the classroom will be able to become one filled with challenging, interactive Science activities.

These materials will allow for students to participate in higher order thinking activities. Stimulating environments, like hands on experimentation, promotes intellectual growth, which leads to academic achievement. When academic achievement occurs, it fosters a love of learning. This love of learning turns today’s students into tomorrow’s leaders.
