My Students
Our listening center is in a mess! The CD players won't read the CDs, our current mp3 players are difficult for a first grader to work. I need something that they can easily use on their own, so I can use my time to work with students while they listen to good readers or practice first grade skills.
I teach at an elementary school in beautiful southern Utah.
Our class has a diverse mix of students. They bring to our class varying levels of readiness for first grade, due to language or economic situations. They each show the eagerness to learn that only a 6/7 year old can show. They make me proud each day in how hard they work on becoming readers, mathematicians, scientists, etc. I am truly proud to be a first grade teacher!
My Project
Each day several of my students will use the iPod Touch to listen to good readers read during "Listen to Reading" in our Daily 5 literacy block. Each day a lucky student will have the opportunity to practice their math facts or sight words through the use of the many apps available for first graders, providing an incentive for hard work and good behavior for the chance to practice this otherwise mundane task. I can also envision other opportunities throughout the day to give struggling students the opportunity to practice handwriting or phonics skills. The iPod Touch is truly a versatile technology tool that will be readily used in any first grade classroom.
The great thing about the iPod Touch is the ease in which students can use it with little or no supervision.
I will be able to focus my time elsewhere in the classroom instead of constantly managing faulty or difficult to use equipment that we currently have. My students will be hearing fluent readers and practicing essential first grade skills without even realizing that they are learning thanks to the apps available.
