Batteries make our MacBooks portable. Students use them at their desks, take them to the library and even out in the hall to be alone with their thoughts. Laptops have revolutionized the way we teach and our students, digital natives that they are, are gaining by leaps and bounds.
Our school is located in an extremely low-income area of a large city in Illinois.
Due to a wonderful grant 7 years ago we were able to obtain 30 MacBooks in a portable cart. Most of the students in our school do not have computers in their homes so their technology education has to occur in school. We know that there are many and more sophisticated items available to schools but we are working with what we have, and the students are learning! They have made multimedia presentations, they have written, edited and shared essays, they work on online lessons independently that are geared to their learning level. Each student has their own laptop for the day, or the class, and they are taking ownership of their learning. The cart is always in use, only resting overnight as the batteries recharge.
Unfortunately after 7 years, the battery life of these continuously used laptops has become short. Some have even given up the ghost, which makes less than a class set available. By getting brand new rechargeable batteries we can resurrect 4 of our deceased machines. Four may not sound like much but to the 4 students who have to share a laptop with 4 others, it is the world.
Our students are used to not having material goods.
They tend to think that they don't deserve anything worthwhile. Getting a laptop to work on that they are responsible for, and responsible for producing quality work on, is a skill that more affluent schools don't have to address. You are the spark that inspires a child from meager means to realize that the whole world is not like their neighborhood. You can pay it forward, and we are forever grateful for your generosity.
