My students need 20 copies each of 3 novels to read to improve their literacy abilities this school year. The titles are "Bridge to Terabithia," "The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate," and "Hoot."

My Students

You know what it is like to find that book that you hate to put down. The feeling is more intense than a movie could ever provide. Sometimes you just can't read fast enough. My students have never experienced this, but I know they just haven't opened the right book.

My students are the children that you rarely see opening a book.

They are the ones who never volunteer to read aloud. Over 50% of the children in this county are receiving free or reduced lunch. It would be unlikely for the parents to be able to provide the books needed for my reading class. The school is located in a small town in North Carolina. They are at least 40 minutes away from a town that contains a big box store. Traveling to a book store would require parents to drive for at least an hour.

My Project

The books I have chosen will allow me to expand my students' vocabulary as well as broaden their view of the world around them. Bridge to Terabithia was chosen for my sixth graders. This book reminds them of what it is like to use your imagination to take you to another place. I will be able to engage students with this book who would otherwise be preoccupied by an electronic device. Hoot was chosen for my seventh graders. At this age children are deciding who they are as person. This book will show them that it is okay to stand up for what you believe. The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate was chosen for my eighth graders. This book is rich in vocabulary that they will need at the high school level. This book follows the story of a little girl who is told that that her efforts would be better served as a homemaker than to learn scientific things and attend school. With my student population containing girls and minorities, I feel certain they will connect with this book on a personal level.

Helping children find that "other" world to escape to at the end of the day has always been a dream of mine.

Books are a way to take you away from your worries, as well as, to inspire you to succeed beyond the limits that others may impose upon you. I want to see my students get so captivated by a book that they can't wait to come to class to read the next chapter. Your donations will make a life long impact on my students by planting the seeds of reading in their lives.
