To Each His/Her Own: âJust-Rightâ Library Books in Spanish
My students need 49 leveled books in Spanish at a 2nd and 3rd grade level to read in class and to borrow for home.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. A.'s classroom raised $531
This project is fully funded
My Students
On paper, my students are all second graders in a Spanish-English, Two-Way Immersion class. De facto, they are a 1st Grade through 5th grade combination class that does not have enough books to sustain them for the duration of the school year.
Half of my class is native Spanish-speaking and the other, native English-speaking.
They are all in a bilingual program in California. These socio-economically, ethnically, and linguistically diverse young people need what we call âjust-rightâ books, i.e. texts that are right at their current reading level in order to optimize their progress. This is especially true of the many students whose parents can't afford to buy or even borrow books on a regular basis.
My Project
Our district made the courageous move towards the pedagogical approach to reading that has been developed by the Columbia Teachers College Reading and Writing Workshop. Traditionally my students had been required to progress through the same anthology of stories at the same time, regardless of their reading level. However, with this new method, pupils are matched with books that are at their current academic stage and interest. This technique requires an extensive, robust classroom library; hence, my request for your financial support. Your funds will allow students to have access to books for individualized reading in class as well as just-right books for home. They will be empowered to become life-long learners at each step of their reading journey!
In our program, English and Spanish is taught %50/%50 after grade 2.
The successful results that we have had, especially with our English language learning, Latino students is because they developed primary language literacy early on. Research has shown that when our pupils reach high school, they are graduating at a higher rate then if they had not been our program. Just-right grade 2 and 3 books in Spanish begins the process of creating multilingual, well-prepared, global citizens!
