"You cannot plow a field by turning it over in your mind." ~Author Unknown
Children must get their hands dirty in what they learn to fully understand. They must be given the opportunity to learn new ideas by using all of their senses and different ways of learning.
My students will be entering their first year of formal education and are eager to learn.
They are in the twelfth largest school district in the state which includes a wide variety of students. The students across the district vary widely in socio-economic status and race.
My Project
Hands-on math and literacy manipulatives will provide students with so many more opportunities to interact with all they are learning. Math manipulatives can be used in so many ways - for games, for direct teaching, and even for choice time. Students can use unifix cubes for measurement, patterning, counting, and even building. The peg boards can help them learn numerals and one-to-one correspondence. Tactile letter and number cards will help the students learn the numerals and letter shapes. The two-sided counters and counting objects will also assist with patterning and one-to-one correspondence. These basic math and literacy skills are so important as the beginning steps to proficiency in math and reading!
The best part about this collection of resources is how versatile the items are. While each item may have a suggested use, the ways students will benefit are truly endless.
Please help us prepare for Kindergarten and beyond!
The students need materials to assist in learning all the important skills taught in the K-4 program. They will be much more prepared for the big jump to full-day Kindergarten.
