This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
The Challenger Learning Center experience will give our 7th grade students at this inner city, low income school the opportunity to see how the science, math and technology they learn in the classroom is put to use in the real world.
Our school is located in a transient neighborhood: 30% of our students transfer in or out every year.
As a Math, Science and Technology Academy, our school's vision is to widen our students' view of the world while we have them, and give these children as many opportunities as possible to experience a unique adventure, which in turn may lead to an exciting future. Since these inner city students seldom leave their neighborhood, simulating a voyage to outer space really leaves an impression. We have taken students in previous years but with budget cuts this year's trip may be in jeopardy.
The simulated mission at Challenger is designed to fully engage the students in the jobs done by all members of the flight team, from Mission Control to the specialists in the Space Shuttle. It shows students how math and science are used in real life situations. They become so invested in the scenario that they leave the building not quite convinced that they didn't really discover a new comet. That type of learning is not soon forgotten.
The families of the Challenger astronauts began these learning centers as a tribute to those who perished in space flight.
The centers provide unique and exhilarating experiences for students, especially our students, who have limited resources for trips. You can provide a stimulating learning experience for deserving children. Thank you.
