My Students

Have you ever needed a calculator and couldn't find one? Or perhaps discovered that it was stuck in a strange mode and was missing the manual? Or that your neighbor's showed the answer in fractional form and yours was in decimal form?

My fifth grade students come from a wide variety of backgrounds.

Our school (located in a major metropolitan area) has a very high ELL population and a high poverty rate. Our students don't always have the financial means to provide supplies of their own.

My Project

Our math curriculum includes working with exponents, decimals, fractions, and square roots. Because calculators are a real world tool, we use them to work many types of problems! Currently we have a hodgepodge of calculators- some supplied by our school and some that our students have supplied. However, the fact that many are stuck in different modes, are too complicated for fifth graders (and their teacher) to figure out, or simply are not working correctly makes teaching basic calculator skills difficult. Also, due to all these problems, there typically are not enough working for everyone to use one. Having a matching set with a troubleshooting manual will ensure that our students can all have tools that will help them find the correct answers!

When students are outside the classroom, they need to know how to use tools to help them solve problems.

One of the most basic tools for math is a calculator. Please help us get calculators into student hands as soon as possible!
