My Students

Developing literacy skills in 2nd grade will be crucial for my students to develop lifelong habits of a good reader. To do this, we will need a classroom library full of great titles for students to engage in daily reading.

Our school is currently undergoing a challenging transition of absorbing a closing school's elementary students.

This has the potential of creating anxiety among students on their first day of school because they have to start in a new environment that is working to adjust it's space to accommodate the 100+ transfer students. My classroom will be challenging the first month because me and a fellow teacher will have to share the gym space until our trailer classrooms are successfully installed. Setting up a functional classroom in a gym will be difficult, but I want to make it as positive an environment as possible so the kids can focus on learning and working towards their reading goals for the year.

My Project

Being a first year teacher, I have not yet acquired a lot of classroom resources. While I have about 20 books of my own that I am bringing in, I would love the opportunity to expand my classroom library to offer a fully stocked selection of titles for kids to choose from. This will allow students to choose books at a variety of levels to ensure they are challenging themselves to increase their fluency and comprehension skills. A broader selection will also increase the opportunity for students to choose books they are interested in and find series and authors they like for future reading.

By building up a classroom library, I will be able to provide students with the resources they need to reach their reading goals for the year.

My classroom will be sparse when it comes to resources since I will be in the gym my first month as the school does it's best to get the new trailer classrooms in place. Having a classroom library, though, will not only provide students with reading materials, but will also encourage them to see that learning and growth can take place anywhere!
