Reading takes you places you have never been before. Tangerine will take my students to a small town in Florida where they will see a young boy overcome many obstacles.
I teach 5th grade to a great bunch of kids.
Unfortunately, many of them see reading as boring or a waste of time. They have the ability to be great readers, they just need great books to help them on their way. They enjoy books that keep them entertained but oftentimes find it difficult to pick out books they would enjoy. They get a chapter or two into a book and put it down. I am trying to help them discover new books, genres, and authors that they will want to read on their own by engaging them in class-wide novel studies.
I am asking for a classroom set of the book Tangerine. Many of my students lack the endurance to read an entire chapter book on their own but highly enjoy the depth a chapter book provides. In order to help build up their endurance and see that chapter books are worth the effort, I want to do a novel study on Tangerine. My students will be able to use the reading comprehension skills taught in class in a fun and engaging way.
With the pressure of state testing, many teachers choose to teach to the test.
They give students reading passage after reading passage which causes the students to become bored with reading. They are taught only to read in order to pass a test. As adults, we know that this isn't the point of reading. I want my students to not only be able to pass state tests but to discover a love of reading that will endure their whole lives.
