This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Its not easy when you want to read and not many choices are provided for you. Towards the end of the school year, many of my students were reading at a rapid pace. The challenge was not having enough leveled books available to them. With your help, my students will have the books they need for the 2011 school year.
My students are from the NYC area.
We are located in one of the poorest neighborhood in the city. Many of our students have poor attendance which affects their daily learning. Our Math scores are higher yearly then ELA. I would like to increase our ELA test scores by providing more variety of books to my students which will broaden their vocabulary and comprehension skills.
My Project
The resources that are requested are leveled readers for grades four and five. These are fascinating nonfiction titles for advancing readers. The books range from global warming, painters, poets, glaciers to the ancient pyramids of Egypt. The books are richly organized to inspire reading.
This project is vital because these books provide differentiated instruction.
They come leveled using the Fountas & Pinnell's system. Each student will select independently without having the struggles of figuring out the level or appropriateness. The standards these books will target are: analyzing text and drawing conclusion and using features of informational texts.
