Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

For the upcoming school year I will be working with students in morning school as well as after school. My goal is to help my students become better readers. In order to do that, I need books.

I have 25, 5th grade girls, that range from general to special education, but as of next year I will work with students in grades kindergarten to fifth grade as an academic tutor in morning school and after school.

Our school is in New York in a low income neighborhood. Many students are falling behind in literacy. In this particular neighborhood children are discouraged to read because some find it as a struggle to do so. I need books so that I can work with them and have them practice good reading strategies.

My Project

I am requesting various books on different genres such as poetry, fun mysteries, holidays, and the Biscuit storybook collection to help foster their independent reading skills. My students need to be exposed to the different genres of books that are available. A lot of my students love comic books and I want to offer my students other types of books that may interest them. I know that my students love Biscuit books, therefore, I would like them to have the entire Biscuit collection to read.

Reading is such an important part of life.

I want my students to become stronger in literacy and grow to love reading. Reading early in life will transfer into being able to go far in life. I want my students to have the resources necessary to be able to practice good reading strategies. This project will help lead the way.
