My Students

My school was hit by a tornado in Missouri. Many of my students have lost family members, pets, homes, and do not have regular access to food or personal needs. My students are in desperate need to have stability in my classroom to have a home away from home where they feel safe, secure, and loved.

Our district was hit by an E5 tornado in Missouri on May 22, 2011.

I teach Kindergarten and for most of my students, this is their first year ever being in a school experience and a tragedy has already happened in their lives. My students are beginning the school year with many needs not only in their home life, but also in their school life. They need stability, counselors, and activities to take their minds off of what has happened. By providing many hands-on activities with the children, I can provide a way to escape from this tragedy as well as make sure that their first year of school will be an amazing experience!

My Project

I am requesting the alphabet center materials because I have lost all of my manipulatives from the tornado. I will be starting over with nothing but chairs and tables in my classroom. The alphabet centers will allow me to share items for the students to see, touch, and feel and connect with the corresponding letter and sound. Students learn best through hands-on activities and the students love to use these during center time. I will use these materials in classroom instruction to introduce letters and sounds, the students will partner up to help teach each other the sounds and letters, and once many letters and sounds are learned students can play many of the games by themselves! The items requested offer classroom instruction with my students and myself, partner instruction to help one another, and individual learning once many letters and sounds are learned!

My Kindergarten students have seen so much tragedy in the last few months, more than I have ever experienced in my life.

This is their first year at school, in a classroom, and I want to make it the best place that it can be! Fun, exciting, hands-on activities provide not only great learning experiences for my children, but make them want to come back to school each and every day and learn more! They need to have a place to feel safe and have fun, memorable moments in the classroom!
