Recovering from Devastation: Becoming Rockstar Readers
My students need 13 subscriptions each to TIME for Kids and Weekly Reader News for small and whole group reading time and an EGGSPERT for motivation to read carefully!
An EF5 Tornado ripped through our city and destroyed our classroom on May 22, 2011. Our new classroom will be constructed a few weeks before school begins in August. It is important for us to have quality reading materials to keep us informed, motivated, and help improve our reading skills.
We are a 3rd grade classroom in Missouri.
We are recovering from a devastating disaster and school is one of the ways that will help us recover from this disaster. It provides a schedule, structure, and family atmosphere. It also is a place where we can access quality reading materials that help motivate us to read. Our classroom does not have these materials right now. We need your help!!
My Project
The subscriptions to TIME for KIDS and Weekly Reader News will be used in many different ways within our classroom. We will use them at small group reading stations where students individually read articles and write summaries of the articles. The Magazines will also be used as whole group reading with partners as skill building; word study; Social Studies and Science information; and current events. The EGGSPERT will be used to quiz the students in small groups and large groups to give them more incentive to read carefully. These magazines will also provide a framework for a classroom newspaper as we examine how the articles are written and published and begin to report on the improving conditions of our city and school as we recover from the tornado.
53% of the students in our city were directly effected by the tornado.
