My students need silkscreen art supplies to Silkscreen T-shirts!
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. T.'s classroom raised $542

My Students
At the end of last school year my students were introduced to the wonderful world of silkscreening their own T-shirts! They were only able to experience briefly how much fun it can be to make your own T-shirt and wear it with pride! We need paint, tools and T-shirts.
We are a Title I school and around 85% of our students are on free and reduced lunch.
The students at my school come from one of Hawaii's largest housing complexes in the state. Our school feels very strongly about keeping the arts as part of our curriculum. We are blessed with many talents, which include our students singing, playing instruments, and dancing hula. Also, our students have won statewide art contests for the past eight years!
My Project
I am an Art Therapist and the students that come to see me for counseling have various behavioral and emotional issues. My room is a place that they can come to share their thoughts and feelings. As an Art Therapist, I use a variety of art materials with the students to help with self-expression, develop problem solving skills, and increase self-esteem. Recently, I introduced them to silkscreening, a medium that I am passionate about. I can provide the screens but we need paint, t-shirts, and tools. I did buy some T-shirts to practice on and the students and I made a lot of mistakes, but it has helped the students learn to problem solve. I have also seen the students express patience with the process (when at times it can be very frustrating). They can use this process as a vehicle for self-expression and communication. The word has spread and now other students at the school want to make their own shirts!
Learning the process of silkscreening and creating their own T-shirts will help the students gain an increased awareness to following instructions, working together, problem-solving skills, patience, respecting other students creativity and feeling a sense of pride.
I will be able to do T-shirt making with my students in counseling sessions, but I will also provide time after-school for other students to make their own shirts too!
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
