Inquiring Minds at Work

My students need science centers, Weekly Readers, and an electricity kit. The students will have the opportunity to think critically and take ownership of their education by working independently or with a partner on science centers that cover a variety of topics.

My Students

To inquire is to investigate an unknown which is exactly what you will see my fifth graders doing when you enter our class during science. With your help, I can replace materials that I lost when my classroom was recently destroyed by a tornado.

I teach fifth grade students in a Title I school in southwest Missouri.

Many of my students have moved in and out of schools since kindergarten, and my classroom may or may not be the only one they will be a part of during the 2011-2012 school year. Nevertheless, my students will come to school in August full of hope for the future and ready to learn.

My Project

Each year, my students come to me with a strong desire to dive into science yet little scientific background. The materials that I have requested will help us to catch up on our science knowledge through literature with a science spin and an electricity activity tub for the whole class to use. In addition, my students will have the opportunity to think critically and take ownership of their education by working independently or with a partner on science centers that cover a variety of topics. These materials will do so much more than just teach science.

Not only did I lose my classroom supplies, but many students that attend our school also lost all or part of their belongings.

When school starts again in August, they will be looking for the love and structure they have come to expect in our school. These materials will help to restore some of the structure that was lost as well as make science inquiry even more exciting.
