My Students

Do you remember when families used to eat together, play together, and read together? Today most families are extremely busy trying to make it by on a daily basis. Parents are tired and children are spending more time with their friends. Here is a way of encouraging and rebuilding families.

I currently serve a population of 56 K-5 students in our school's Learning Center who have been or are in the process of being diagnosed with learning disabilities.

These students are receiving Tier 3 Response to Intervention instruction in the hopes of closing the achievement gap with their general education peers. Our students have scored far below basic on the CST (State Test) and intensive on District math and reading assessments. They have been unsuccessful with traditional methods of teaching and have lacked growth towards their academic achievement due to their varied ways of learning. Students are taught using small group and whole group instruction targeting skill deficits in order to increase understanding of grade level curriculum. Many of these students have multiple learning disabilities which often interferes with the way they process information. Family Literacy would give parents an active role in their child's learning and increase parental involvement in school.

My Project

My goal is to develop a longstanding partnership between home and school, school and student, and parent and child. By doing so, relationships will become more strengthened and parents more involved in the learning process which will only increase student achievement. In providing services for these struggling students, I am well aware of the disappointment and discouragement many of them have toward school and learning. They are embarrassed in the classroom, will act out, and become behavior problems. The Family Literacy Program will allow students to choose books that are at their guided reading levels and can be read independently with some assistance and success. Parents will receive a list of of questions that can be asked during the reading to ensure comprehension is taking place.

Family Literacy would significantly increase participation and learning by giving schools the opportunity to develop parent-student-school connections.

Parents would take a more active role in their child's education, while at the same time, be engaged in making new connections with their child that will last a lifetime.
