My Students
"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.” is a well-put truth stated by Dr. Seuss in his book, "Oh, the Places You'll Go." I want to give my students a NOOK color to motivate them to read more, and go further in their education!
My 3rd graders are a sweet bunch from a very rural community in eastern North Carolina.
Our school is a K-8 school and is relatively small for the number of grade levels represented. With the school being so small, the teachers and students form a special bond, that the students take with them through all of their grades. The area surrounding the school is very high poverty, and many of the students come from these neighborhoods and enjoy coming to school to use the resources that they cannot afford at home, especially computers and other technology!
My Project
I am requesting a NOOK color for my classroom for the main purpose of increasing student motivation to read. I want my students to get excited about reading, and to look forward to a good book. I can imagine that being below grade level by the time you reach third grade is intimidating, and this alone could cause a student to lose their love of learning. I want to motivate these kids by giving them a special place to read on their own, at their own pace. One of the great features of the NOOK color is the read aloud application. Not only is a book able to be read aloud to a student, but read aloud at the student's own pace. I think that this will be an especially effective tool for use in the classroom. A student will have time to re-read a page before turning and listening to the next page. Students will learn to read more fluently, as well as improve their comprehension with the NOOK color. And, hopefully, they will also develop a lifelong love for reading and learning.
The donations that you make to my project will make a lasting difference in my students lives by increasing their desire to learn.
The generous donations will contribute to a love of reading and a curiosity in developing technology. No matter what I teach my students during the year, they will have to motivate themselves to keep learning in the years to come, and a NOOK color will help them learn to self-motivate and, in turn, achieve life goals.
