Summer in the Garden

My students need gardening tools, supplies such as gloves, tool sets and a culinary herb kit to support our brand new urban school yard garden. We need a greenhouse pop-up, as well.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Most of my students do not live in homes where they have the freedom to dig up the yard and plant a garden. They live in multifamily homes and their parents are not the owners. Or they live in a place where the "yard" is concrete or asphalt. They spend most of their time indoors with technology.

Our students are mostly Latino and African American and attend the city's school with the highest percent of students receiving free or reduced lunch.

We are our city's most urban school. We live in central CT. My students are naturally curious and are at an age when they still want to learn. Many of the students come from single parent households and many of them are English language learners who need lots of hands on experiences. My students are generally very excited about school because independent learning is encouraged so they are experienced in choosing topics of interest to study and then conducting the research to present orally to the rest of the class. The effort they put into their learning is commendable. They are learning to be critical readers and thinkers who respectfully challenge the status quo.

My Project

Our class has just planted the school's first school yard garden for the entire student population to use with the guidance of their teachers. We planted squash, eggplant, three varieties of tomatoes, string beans and cucumbers so far with the only tool we had, a spade! We water our garden every day and they are so excited to be amongst the tiny plants. The resources I ordered will allow us to work in the garden more efficiently. The pop-up green house will enable us to start our plants from seeds in the early spring and plant them in late spring so that students will experience the complete cycle from seed to plant to fruit. We will take care of the garden all summer long with our "Summer in the Garden" program which is currently being developed. Students will participate in garden themed activities from all disciplines and cook, too. We will harvest our garden in the fall and have a small "Farmer's Market" where we will sell our produce to neighborhood families at a low cost.

This project is important because it will be a wonderful tool to supplement our curriculum in all subject areas.

Students will be able to see first hand how food gets to our tables. They will be involved in making healthy recipes using the vegetables grown in our garden. They will help at the "Farmer's Market" and will help in deciding what we should buy for our garden using the money that is earned. That will teach them that our garden impacts the community and vice versa.
