My Students

Help two classes of students paint with watercolors. Watercolor painting is a calming activity that teaches children to focus. We are classroom teachers, but we try to infuse as much art and music education as possible into the curriculum.

We teach 5th and 6th grade students in an extremely diverse public school where 75% of the students are eligible for free or reduced lunch.

Over a quarter of our students are immigrants. Our school, by mandate, must focus on reading and math. Often this can leave little time for enrichment activities, even though art is the soul of education. Children enjoy painting because it is relaxing and rewarding, and it is not graded. It builds students' emotional connection to the school. We manage to fit in time for painting by connecting it to other subjects, such as science or social studies. In addition, we sometimes sneak in painting simply for the joy of it.

My Project

Our students will use these materials throughout the school year to create watercolor paintings. Students will explore a variety of techniques and subjects. We are asking for these supplies because our school does not have money for art materials for classroom teachers. These supplies will allow each child to have his or her own palette and to use student-grade tube watercolors, as well as proper watercolor paper.

Students need arts experiences as much as they need reading, writing and math.

Art is simply a different way of exercising the brain. With these supplies, our students will participate in the rewarding art of watercolor painting.
