This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you know how difficult it is to learn a new language without the appropriate resources? My students want to speak English, but they are struggling to listen and record stories since they do not have enough headsets.
My students are 6th, 7th and 8th grade bilingual and special education students.
They are Hispanics and have different English levels. Some of them have recently immigrated to the United States and they need more resources to learn to speak English. Our school is located in a poor neighborhood where most of the parents do not have steady jobs to buy all the supplies the students need. The school tries to provide as much as possible what it is needed in the classroom but sometimes we need to replace or buy new items and our budget is very limited.
My Project
Every year, I notice that the students are struggling more and more to learn English. Therefore, we are using the reading program Read 180 from Scholastic to help students to perform better and acquire the new language. The students are able to get some prior knowledge before they read their stories. Besides, they listen, speak, read and write. However, they need headsets with microphones to be able to complete their activities. Students love to work on this program but feel frustrated when they do not have the headsets to do the recording. This set them back because they can not move on to the next level. We have been using this program since October and the reports show that the students who have more activities, their reading scores improve. Students feel motivated when they see that their scores are higher and as a result they are able to perform at grade level and eventually exit the bilingual program.
My students can't afford to buy the headsets with microphones but this is an important part of the reading program to listen and record their words, paragraphs and stories.
Most of them don't like to read and the bean bags in the Independent Reading Zone will motivate them to relax and read for fun. We have a lot of hope on this reading program and we feel that this is what my bilingual and special education students need to get the education that will change their lives.
