"I'm a third grade teacher at Clara Barton Elementary School in Chicago. Most our students (91%)are from low-income homes. Many of our young learners rely on our school to broaden their worldview, so they can see further than the neighborhood they live in. In my class of thirty only a handful have been to downtown Chicago, even though it's a few miles away! If you ask them what country they live in, many will say, "Chicago!"

I have felt compelled this year to show them they don't have to belong in one area, that the world is theirs to discover. I want them to have the knowledge of what's out there, so they have the power to rise above the circumstances they are in. As I started teaching them about the continents and different countries, I found myself frustrated because we have a VERY OUTDATED world map and no other resources to truly inspire them to know about the world.

We are in need of a world map, a map of the United States, and literature about different countries. Thank you for being willing to make an impact on the lives of young ones you don't have the privilege of meeting. Their lives will be touched by it and hopefully they will see that it's a small world after all!

The cost of large world and US maps plus National Geographic Traveler books about various countries is $2,042, including shipping and fulfillment ?.

Dear Gina, carol, Erica, Jacqueline, Joanna, LESLIE, Kruti, Emily, BRUCE and Anonymous Donor,
I can't wait to share the news with my students that we will receive all the resources you have so generously provided. This year I am teaching second grade at Clara Barton and we've already had several conversations in which a globe, a map, and books on various countries would've truly enriched our learning. The funding of this proposal couldn't have come at a better time! I'm also creating Social Studies units for this year and because you have funded this proposal I will be able to have a unit on countries around the world. My students love hearing about different places and many of their favorite read-alouds have been non-fiction books that have informed them on cultures different than their own. Now they will have the opportunity to read about many more countries during their independent reading time! Thank you for looking to make a difference and for being part of helping my students learn that the world is a marvelous place and it's much bigger than the neighborhood they live in. Your donation will make our year of learning a much better one!

On Jan 3, 2008, Ms. T. followed this note with student letters sent via mail to the donor who completed this project, and to donors who gave $100 or more.
