This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Time for reading and the anxiety creeps in, "Is the teacher going to call on me to read? What if I mess up?" This feeling is common among low readers in classrooms everywhere. Listening centers give those children an opportunity to engage in literature and hear fluent readers WHILE reading the text.

We are a Title 1 school in Arizona.

Over 90% of the children receive free meals from the school, and a $3 field trip is often too expensive for the families to afford. The parents work extremely hard to provide for their children and give them more opportunities than they ever had. Besides having financial struggles, the neighborhood where my students are being raised is a very rough place to live. The students are familiar with street lingo, gang colors/territories, common drug use, and much more than I ever knew about as a child. Just because this is the world the kids live in now, doesn't mean that it's the only world they should experience! Literature can and should give worldly experiences to all children!

My Project

The main resource that I am requesting is a listening center for up to 6 children. This will allow me to put a CD in, provide the students with a copy of the text, and leave them to enjoy literature and feel as though they are doing the work independently. Other items that I am requesting are audio books to be played in the center. My decisions were based on the books available at my school and ones that will engage a wide variety of children.

There's nothing like taking a break from the world you know to experience something completely different!

Books allow children to do just that. Please help me give students with low reading abilities access to these amazing experiences.
