My students need these books and art supplies to complete ten different Family Art and Literacy Bags to be taken home by kindergarten through second grade students.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Think back to when you first started to look at picture books and you had to draw what you saw. Was it fun and engaging? Many of my students do not have the supplies to create art or read about art books.
Several students (210) would be impacted by the Family Art and Literacy Bags.
For this project my students range from four years to eight years old. Our charter school services an inner city community; 70% of our students receive free or reduced lunch.
My students are excited about when we create art projects. They dive right in and create many wonderful art projects in the class. When they finish, my students are always asking me to take home art materials because they do not have crayons or other supplies.
My Project
The Family Art and Literacy Bags are designed to provide an opportunity for students and family members to interact with a variety of art supplies and art related books or themes. There are 10 different themed bags (tree, Faith Ringgold/quilts, jungle, Chinese dragons, Australian animals, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera, alphabet art, line, Monet’s garden, and Vincent Van Gough’s sunflowers).
Each bag contains two to three books and art activities around a theme. Each bag also contains art supplies for an art project for parents and students to make together. The bags reinforce and extend our curriculum while providing practice for newly acquired skills and knowledge.
Marilyn Jager Adams once said, “Reading aloud with children is known to be the single most important activity for building the knowledge and skills they will eventually require for learning to read.” When parents read and create art with their child, they are spending quality time together while building positive communication.
My students are craving the opportunity to create art. Please give them this opportunity to become budding readers and artists.
