My students need hands-on, multisensory math materials, such as a Number Patterns Magnetic Math Kit and regrouping kits, to support the relationship between addition and subtraction as well as regrouping.
Isn't it amazing that students are expected to borrow and carry (regrouping) in first grade? With our newly adopted state standards, this is now our reality. Our students are ready for the challenge, but they need additional materials to take the abstract concepts and make them concrete.
Our students attend a public school which is centered on brain-based learning.
We serve a culturally diverse community, with students of varying backgrounds and ability levels. Each student has his/her own learning style, and our school works to differentiate instruction based on student needs/levels. Our first grade students are eager learners who love to connect their classroom experiences to their lives outside of school.
My Project
Get ready for take off! First grade students will be entering a time machine with "Math of the Future" programmed as the final destination. Upon entering their classrooms, our time travelers will be given a one way ticket to be whisked away for a year full of multi-sensory, engaging activities centered on Singapore's Math in Focus. This newly adopted math program, also called "the math of the future," is an entirely new and exciting way to teach and learn math. During our journey, the voyagers will make frequent stops to master problem solving skills, find relationships between numbers, model equations and operations, and explore many additional concepts. Each place has a different purpose and goal based on our state standards preparing our students for their new lives in the future. When our journey ends, students will be prepared mathematicians ready to take on any math problem the future holds. Our bags are packed! We are ready to go! Would you like to join us on our adventure?
Our time travelers will benefit from receiving instruction at their level with activities that appeal to a variety of learning styles.
Skills will be presented in a number of ways allowing students to choose the strategy that works best for them. Students will be given the opportunity to work independently or with their peers. As we reflect on math instruction with our new series, we have found a great need to supplement lessons with additional activities to ensure mastery of skills.
