SMILE, Mr. and Mrs. Book! You're on Camera! (A C2i Project)
My students need a user-friendly digital camera and a digital photo frame so they can create advertisements for books and share reading experiences with classmates!!! :-)
I am a lucky teacher. I have a classroom FULL of readers! My students devour books by the dozens and are constantly asking to go to the library. Honestly, I am living the dream this year! If I wanted to, I could sit back and just let this school year play out with my students happily reading...
...BUT, no.
I will not do that. Instead, I want to CHALLENGE my students. I want them to take their love of reading to the next level. I want them to SHARE the books they love reading with each other in a truly collaborative environment! My classroom is made up of 23 second and third graders. At the beginning of this school year, I was nervous about teaching reading to a group of students from different grade levels -- I wasn't sure how that would work! Well, let me tell you, NOW teaching reading is one of my favorite things to do! It is so great to watch my students reading to each other! I love hearing my 2nd graders trying to match the expression and rate of a more fluent 3rd grade reader. I love watching my 3rd graders demonstrate patience and care as they listen to a 2nd grader reading. My students are a true community of readers and that is why I want them to take part in this proposed C2i project.
My Project
What does "C2i" stand for? It stands for "challenge to innovate." Using innovative technology and ideas in my classroom, I intend to challenge my students to take their love of reading to the next level. I am requesting a digital camera and a digital photo frame. Here is the basic set-up for this project:
1. After reading a book, students will design a set that will serve as an advertisement for their book. Students will include characters from the book in their set. Characters might be made out of clay, or they could use dolls dressed up as the characters, or maybe, just maybe, THE STUDENT will be dressed as the character! Students will also included the setting of the book in their set. Perhaps they will design a backdrop to illustrate the setting, or maybe they will create a model!
2. After the set has been designed, students will take a picture of their set using the digital camera. Think, "movie poster," only for a book!
3.
Students will download their digital image to the digital photo frame and present their book advertisement to the class. (The images will remain on the digital frame as part of a continuous slideshow.)
The idea behind this project is for students to share the books they love with their classmates and to inspire a continued desire to READ! This project will motivate students to do just that and will also aid in my goal of turning my students into life-long readers! Please help us! :-
