My Students
Geometry...either you get it or you don't. I remember hearing that from so many of my teachers in school. I want my students to always "get it." There are hands-on resources that students can now use to help them understand the concepts, unlike most adults today that learned from a textbook.
My students are kind, generous people.
They are eager to learn and to make the “right” choices. They work hard, despite the challenges that sometimes get in the way and hold them back. Many of the things they deal with are out of their control and still they have hope and a smile on their face. They inspire me to work like I do in hopes of making their futures something they aspire high for. Many require different resources to teach them and it’s my job to provide them with the foundation necessary to make them successful. The majority of my students face learning disabilities and/or difficult home lives. Coming from a Title 1 school, these kids need all the support they can get and it’s my job, as well as the communities, to provide them with the opportunity. These kids are our future – it’s that simple!
My Project
My students need a variety of hands-on geometry resources to help them have a concrete understanding of the shapes, angles, movements, and area that are found in geometry. These games and manipulatives will be used in whole group and small group instruction. The math textbooks that we currently have provide examples on flat paper. If the students can see and touch the shapes and angles, they will have a concrete understanding that will stay with them. One resource will even let the students build 3-D shapes. This will give them the opportunity to see all the sides and vertices and understand how the net (the 3-D shape if unfolded and laid out flat) would look. By reinforcing the shapes through the manipulatives and games, the students will begin to see geometry in their everyday lives. Understanding how math is used and why it is important in their lives, gives the students a purpose for learning it. With a purpose they can learn anything they put their minds to.
ALL students, no matter their economic status, can excel in school if given the right environment and materials.
Most of the times these students just learn differently, so these materials give the students the opportunity to have the hands-on learning that they require to be successful. Simply providing different resources than the traditional textbook, gives them the experiences necessary for the understanding of the concepts to take place.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
More than half of students from low‑income households
