Engaging students in learning is the hardest job a teacher has. Getting students to want to learn for the "joy" of learning. Today's kids are into technology and when I read about what teachers are doing with ipods I was excited. Applications can be purchased for reading, math and more.
I have first graders that are reading fifth grade books and I have first graders that are still learning their letter sounds.
How better to reach them all then allowing them access to the data they need right in the palm of their hands. Students can actively engage in reading, math, and even record themselves reading so they can hear their own progress as they read and re-read material. Nothing motivates today's children like technology. I see the ipods giving students a desire to participate in the academic activities while also giving them the opportunity to learn how to operate some of today's most modern technology.
My Project
Using the personal lessons, students will be able to increase their reading fluency, vocabulary, and math fluency. They will be instructed on how to use the camera and the video devices as they interact with our classroom website. The students are wild about our promethean board and our website, but it is mostly operated by one person at a time or by the teacher. With the ipods I plan to turn more control of these items to my students and allow them to participate in guiding our classroom learning.
Our students consistently arrive with below benchmark reading scores and without these essential scores they struggle in writing and math.
You can not solve a problem that you cannot read. You can't write a sentence when you can't read. I want to offer my students every opportunity to leave first/second grade with above levels of reading and math fluency.
