My students need 6 graphic novels and 11 classroom collections including the King Series, Fun Food Fiction, and Plant Cycles to grow literacy and introduce food farming.
Remember finding that first book that you fell in love with? Many of my students just have not discovered that book at their reading level or interest level yet.
I am an educator in a rural area Kentucky school with a high concentration of poverty.
We are located near a military installation and have many military families in our school community. I teach collaboration classes that include special needs and general education students. All my kids want to perform at higher levels!
My Project
Few resources are available to the disinterested readers in my school. These children have shown great curiosity in high interest but appropriate reading level books such as graphic novels and real world environment-related books! I can help even more students with additional books! I am requesting a variety of books including the King Series Complete First Grade Series and associated teacher's guide, graphic novels, four environment collections (Food Fun Fiction, Plant Cycles, Seasons, Weather) as well as Caldecott, Newberry and ALA collections. We will read, analyze and love these books!
The use of these types of reading materials is a great way to foster literacy skills through both a greater love of reading and by training higher order reasoning skills. In conjunction with previously funded projects, and with the help of sponsors like UPS and FEED USA, my class also wants to expand on our current projects for the school garden by learning more about the crops we grow!
Your help will make it possible for these students to explore ideas and content that are simply not available to them in the regular classroom resources for reading.
Along with the curricular benefits of the project, you will also be giving these students an opportunity to experience the pleasure of reading books that touch on their hands-on project interests. You can make a difference in the lives of the wonderful children I teach!
