It's outta here! ... I'm talking about baseball books flying off the shelves of the school library. My kinder though fifth grade students have baseball fever fueled by the opening of the 2011 season! They want to read all about it!
By the numbers, we are 406 K-5 students (34% English language learners; 41% qualify for free or reduced lunches).
These are "city kids" who dream of becoming Major League Baseball stars, who follow the game, but who may get the opportunity to go to the stadium with an after-school club or with the family once during their school years, if they're lucky. With your help, these new books will provide both boys and girls a foundation for their passion and fuel for their imagination, for years to come.
My Project
With over 400 students using the school library each week, you can imagine the demand on our resources. Once baseball season kicks into full swing, I'm afraid I won't be able to satisfy the demand for books about the sport. It's heartbreaking having to tell the six year old who just signed up for Little League that there are no books left showing what a baseball diamond looks like. How about the 12 year old who wants to know the history of the sport, but walks away empty-handed? My wish list is comprised of books about baseball that will satisfy a range of ages and reading levels. I added a joke book, too. What's childhood without knowing, "What'd the glove say to the ball?" (Spoiler Alert: Catch you later!)
Spring fever means baseball fever and we've got it bad here!
Your generous donation will help the school library stock up on the best prescription I know - knowledge.
