Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you do something well without experience? My students are learning about organisms and ecology but it is very difficult to help them understand how even small creatures have a special job in the delicate balance of things when they have few hands-on experiences, and lack the language they need.
My students are first graders in a small, primarily industrial, but rural town.
Most of them (86%) are Hispanic, and come from homes of hardworking immigrants who wish to see their children have better chances for a prosperous future. My students are hardworking, and eager, but they still struggle with language. This makes learning difficult at times, especially when we are talking about abstract concepts, but our school is great, and the teachers here work together as a team. Since I have been here, I have seen numerous guidelines embodied to see that regardless of what happens in the world, our students come first which is why we were one of the few schools in our county that made AYP despite having such a high population of ELLs. Our students are important to us, and we believe that we are important to them.
My Project
With your generous donations, my classroom can share materials that will engage students' minds for years to come on life, Earth, and the growth of organisms. Our students are not just the future of America. They are the future of the world, but as we have seen, unless more people care, our world may not have much of a future. If change is to take place, it is up to us to instill the empathy, and knowledge needed to see it occur. So you see, your donations are not just physical objects, put away on a shelf and forgotten; they are the embodiment of a future mindset this planet so desperately needs to survive. My students need a schoolyard-sized worm composter, red worms, soil, scoops, and various viewers that will let us see the seeds and worms as they grow and change.
Our earth is being neglected more and more each day.
Ice caps are melting; our world is being inundated with trash, oil, and smog, and many species of animals are disappearing with seemingly little concern. With your help, I hope to arm our students with the awareness they need to fight for and save our precious resources - our planet Earth. What better way to do it than with hands-on materials allowing them to explore and discover why these resources are so important for all.
