This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Life is like a blanket, too short," said Marion Howard. Short they may be, I want the lives of my students to be meaningful and filled with value. My students have a desire to help others, but with limited resources themselves, they are unsure of what to do or where to start.

My students are 8th graders in Texas who qualify 100% for Title I, are 99% Hispanic, 94% qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch, and 31% are English Language Learners.

Many of the students help work to support the family or help watch younger siblings after school.

My Project

With this fleece fabric, students will be investigating many of the concepts of geometry, conversions, and unit rates while creating a good that will later be donated to a local homeless shelter. The fleece will be used to create no-sew fleece blankets that will allow students to explore geometric ideas like perimeter, area, shape identification, and dilations. Students will also complete conversions between inches and yards. Proportional concepts like unit rates, similar figures, and scale factor will be explored as well. In addition to these mathematical skills, students will write notes and words of encouragement and support to be included with the blankets when they are donated to the local homeless shelter.

Even though many of my students have little to give, they have a strong desire to help others.

With this project, my students will have a chance to explore many of the mathematical concepts we cover in a hands-on manner that will allow them to meet this desire. My students will be able to both provide valuable assistance to others and develop a greater understanding of many of the curricular objectives they need to learn.
