My students need Model Magic clay compound and Play-doh, in a variety of colors, to participate in hands-on English activities, including sculpture creation.
Have you ever been the antsy kid in class? Unable to pay attention no matter what you or the teacher did? Many of my kinetic learners experience this every day. They want to learn, but need hands on activities to do so. With your help I can provide them with some of those activities.
My students attend a high-poverty, low-performing Title I school in Delaware that has traditionally been ranked among the worst secondary schools in the state.
However, last year they made strides in both graduation rate and state test-performance level. Despite these classifications, my students absolutely love to learn. Many of them learn best by doing hands on projects. They need to manipulate the materials to truly understand a concept.
My Project
The materials requested will give my students a chance to do hands on activities with their vocab. words, literary terms, and a variety of summarizing activities. In the past I have had them create sculptures outside of class for their vocab. words and mold play-doh in class to create important scenes from works of literature. Having packets of Model Magic, a wonderful and easy to use alternative to clay, will allow me to have students to work on their sculptures in class. Additionally, it will allow me to give students without the means to purchase materials for their out of class sculptures materials to use - increasing the chances that they will complete the assignment. The play-doh will also be used for a lesson introducing the writing process, as it is easy for students to create and "revise" their sculptures.
Traditional school settings often lack opportunities for students to do hands-on work outside of science.
Having these materials will allow me to open the door of understanding to many of my students who need these kinds of activities in order to comprehend terms and concepts related to ELA.
