Having taught social studies for 3 years, I have come to realize that many of my 6th grade students struggle with map skills. I am writing this proposal with the hopes of helping my students experience map skills in a whole different light. I am asking for 4 electronic globes that will enable the students to play map skills games and compete with one another while at the same time, increasing their knowledge of geography skills. When students play a game of this nature, they do not even realize that the main objective is to learn. Students in my classroom will be excited and motivated to use this new equipment. This will certainly enhance the learning experience for both my higher level thinkers as well as for my students who need extra practice and immediate feedback. Students will be able to utilize these globes during centers, for early finishers, as well as guided group activities. These globes also have the feature in which updated information can be downloaded periodically to make sure that all information is up to date. Current event information is also a feature in which students can interact with the globe and the smart pen that comes with it. I have several ESL students. This resource will help them feel successful because the language can be adjusted if necessary to accommodate what is best for them. I can even set it to Spanish or French so that my struggling ESL students can still grasp the map skills I am targeting.
