Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
In order for our students to succeed, they need the tools to allow them to do so. While we live near the heart of technology, our students have been using computers that in many cases are older than the students themselves.
This year I am teaching second grade in a low-income district in California.
My class is comprised of diverse learners, some of whom are students with special needs who are fully included and mainstreamed into the general education classroom and 2nd grade curriculum. Students who enter second grade at my school typically have academic levels below the expectation of incoming second graders. Almost all of our students are English language learners and qualify for free and reduced lunch.
My Project
My students would be receiving one MacBook for each student to use through this grant. While we do have a few computers and iPads in our classroom, this grant would allow every student to access the same information at the same time, albeit differentiated by reading and math levels. I already have classroom subscriptions to Raz-kids.com and Planet Turtle to support students in reading and math, but these MacBooks would allow my students to all access these materials simultaneously. This would allow me to work with a small group of students while the rest of the class practices on their own.
While other teachers might have a hard time getting a wireless lab up and running in their classroom, I know my classroom will not face those struggles. My extensive technology background will allow me to fix any problems as they come up, especially as I teach an after-school technology program where our middle schoolers become technicians themselves.
While I have shown in the past few years that my students can benefit from using computers in our classroom, this grant would give us the best resources to reach our maximum capabilities.
These MacBooks would also be treated very gently and locked up every night using the included security cart.
Additionally, our current computers would not go unused. Instead, they would be given to two other second grade classrooms at our school, allowing more students to benefit from your gift.
