Teenage girls need great books that allow them to escape reality for a while, to realize that they're not alone, and to connect with strong female protagonists.
I teach high school English in an area that's been hit hard by the economy.
I love to read young adult fiction, and every book that I buy and read goes straight to my classroom library for my students to read and enjoy. Thankfully, I've been able to connect with many of my female students because of this. The girls in my classes are looking for books with characters going through "real stuff" like Jumping Off Swings and Some Girls Are. These fantastic realistic fiction novels will give my girls something they can relate to. Other girls in my classes want to daydream and enjoy great fantasy titles like Paranormalcy and Hex Hall.
My Project
The girls attending the high school where I teach are hungry for excellent reads. I use these novels for sustained silent reading and for my Young Adult Literature class; both require a large variety of books to choose from. Sustained silent reading (SSR) has been an excellent way for me to hook my non-readers because they have a chance to sample numerous books. My Young Adult Lit class requires students to choose books to read based on a project of their choice. This class has become so popular that it's hard to keep books on the shelf for everyone interested. Donating to this project will provide the girls I teach with more novels to read for their projects. It will also help foster their love of reading.
Donating to this project will benefit the girls in my classes this year and for years to come.
Yes, the girls will have more choices for SSR and for their projects, but more importantly, you will help foster their literacy. The more we read, the better readers, writers and speakers we become.
