"Can we read all hour, Mrs. A.?" Before this year it was rare for me to hear this from one of my male students. Fortunately, more of the boys in my classes are looking for good "guy books" to read.
I've made it my mission to convert my male reluctant readers into readers.
Many of my senior boys this year haven't read a book since they were in middle school! But once I help them find a book that fits their interest (i.e. sports, action/adventure, fantasy) they want to keep reading. Books like The Hunger Games, Right Behind You, Twisted, and Deadline have been excellent "home run" books with my male students. Since our public school is in an area that's struggling, most of my students rely on my classroom library to find books to read.
My Project
I'm requesting a wide variety of books to help satisfy the diverse preferences among my male students. Some of my boys have requested titles by Gary Paulsen such as Guts and Dogsong. Other boys are looking for sports-related titles like Gym Candy by Carl Deuker. All of my classes include sustained silent reading at least three days a week. Many of the boys in class have a difficult time finding the right book for them. Receiving these books will give my boys more choice when they decide on something to read.
I've been very lucky in my quest to convert male non-readers into readers, but there are still many boys in my classes that need to find their home run book.
Your donations to this project will not only help the boys I teach now, but the boys I'll be teaching in the future. Let's give these boys something fantastic to read like Ship Breaker, The Knife of Never Letting Go and Bruiser. Believe me, once these boys find a good book they're sure to tell their friends!
