The Heart- Fall To Pieces!

My students need a practical way to absorb information about the circulatory system, more specifically, the heart.

My Students

I'm always looking for practical ways to help my students learn. Having a model of the heart is one way to help them understand this vital organ and its functions.

I am lucky to teach at a small public school.

The group of Health students I teach, ninth and tenth graders, are amazing. They are just kids, but are fun loving and love to learn. My students are from a small city that has been plagued by financial woes. However, they are a group of students that are serious about education. Their thirst for knowledge really has no limits. However, major budget cuts in our school district have stalled our abilities to continue to upgrade our classroom resources. Despite this fact our students are engaged in trying to be creative, along with their teacher, to find materials that will help enhance their classroom experiences.

My Project

Having a large heart model that can be taken apart would be ideal. With the use of a simple heart model, my curriculum can be expanded in several ways. The students can create a drawing or a clay model while learning the different chambers and functions. Being able to take the heart apart and see the different sections, valves, muscles, etc., will give them practical knowledge about their own hearts. We can also have lessons on how to strengthen and take care of our hearts.

I have several students that aspire to be nurses and doctors.

This heart model is a practical way to teach them about their bodies as well as continue to peak their interest in the Health field. The heart model will be used in our biology classes as well. Therefore, the use of this model will impact more than just my classroom students.
