Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Being a science teacher is like being a parent...you're constantly bombarded with questions, many of which you don't know the answer to: "What's the average winter temperature in Maine?", "What do global wind patterns look like?", "Why are the Doldrums called the Doldrums?" In this day and age, we should have the capacity to jump online and find the answers to these questions as they come up in class discussion. But with one ancient desktop computer in my classroom, this is not feasible.
I can schedule time in our school's computer lab, but I have to set it up weeks in advance, and it does not allow for the spontaneity that is a necessary part of teaching. I would like to have 5-6 laptop computers so that students can use them in my classroom for web research, preparing presentations, collecting data for labs, and writing up their lab reports. Having a set of computers in the classroom would benefit all of my students -- about 100 per year. Only a minority of students (about 30%) have computers at home, so it is hardship for most students to complete it, especially those who play a sport or have an after-school job.
Recently, for example, students conducted a lab investigation on air pressure and temperature. I wanted to have them look up some quick background information on the topic, but could not spare the entire class period I knew it would take if we had gone into the computer lab. With a few computers in my classroom, it would allow students to quickly look up the information and finish their lab activities in the same class period. My classroom is in desperate need of joining the 21st century -- and taking advantage of the wealth of information available on the Web!
