Fun With Words to Build Vocabulary

My students need 2 sets of hands-on activities and games that will help them to develop and expand upon their vocabulary skills.

My Students

Vast knowledge and an array of cultural experiences are what my English language learners bring to the classroom. Unfortunately, their vocabulary knowledge does not always allow them to express that, which is sometimes reflected in their writing projects and test results.

My students come from many different countries and cultural and linguistic backgrounds.

They are from families who have immigrated to the United States in search of new opportunities for education and future successful careers and lives. Their love of learning is evident in their excitement for learning new concepts and words and for being able to express their thoughts in a new language. The schools they attend here in the United States are supportive and encouraging, but due to a number of factors, do not always make Adequate Yearly Progress on test scores.

My Project

Being able to identify, use, and elaborate on English vocabulary is an essential skill for students in today's schools and later in their successful lives. In addition, students need opportunities to have fun with learning and to build off of their love of play. These box sets of word analysis activities will allow children to develop analytical skills in understanding words as they enjoy playing the games inside individually or with groups. These vocabulary skills will improve their language growth and provide them with the boost toward vocabulary fluency and language proficiency that they need.

My students come with a vast knowledge base that they are sometimes unable to share due to vocabulary deficits.

This provides a challenge for them as they are sometimes unable to convey their knowledge in the classroom. These vocabulary building activity sets will help students to show what they may know in their first language but may not be able to express in their new English language. The effect on their academic progress and motivation for further success will be priceless.
