This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Hi!
Our students face the daily challenge of poverty and need to have a safe place where they can relax, meet new friends, and express themselves creatively while learning patience and perseverance. In addition, they will be earning Art and Elective credits towards their graduation.
FHS is a continuation high school in East San Jose.
Our school takes students who are removed from other high schools for a variety of reasons including truancy, incarceration, pregnancy, and students with small children (we have a Family Learning Center where student moms and dads learn parenting skills).
At FHS, we meet students where they are at and attempt to help them become life-long learners. Several of my students have informed me that FHS was the first school that had proposed college as an option for them.
My Project
My students need more knitting needles and yarn so additional students can join our knitting club. I started a knitting club several years ago through donations from Donors Choose. It is thriving and students are earning credits towards their diploma. Since our campus is small, serving 365 students, our staff and facilities cannot offer many choices for electives, so our club is making a huge difference in the lives of our students, and more students are joining us every Tuesday after school.
Our momentum is going strong, and we need more materials to help inspire more students to join us.
Our entire staff is motivated and inspired by the positive changes they have seen in students, who are knitting all over campus. Shy students are becoming more engaged and hyper students are able to sit down and concentrate on something that they truly enjoy.
