My Students

Wouldn't you rather "experience" learning, rather than just read about what somebody else has done? Please give my students the chance to experience what a living reptile actually looks like and feels like "in the flesh."

The students of my junior high school come from a fairly low socioeconomic background in Central California.

We have a number of English Language Learners and a very strong AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) program which enables low-income, first-generation, college-bound students extra help with writing and inquiry skills. As you may know, California is strapped for cash, and therefore purchasing new materials has become quite difficult. Nevertheless, our students still have a need and a strong desire to take advantage of "hands-on" learning opportunities.

My Project

For many students, science is both boring and somewhat intimidating. As a teacher, I am always trying to think of ways to engage and motivate my students with interesting learning opportunities. What better way to motivate a child to learn than to put a snake in his or her face! Certainly, there is an initial aspect of fear, but with care and careful instruction, my students will not only learn how to overcome their fears, they will also be able to experience the characteristics of a living reptile with their own eyes and their own hands. My students need a corn snake with 7 materials such as a no jump screen cover, a glass aquarium and a clamp lamp for a terrarium to observe the characteristics of a living animal.

Fear can not only paralyze a person, it can actually cause one to regress.

This is how many students approach school; they're afraid, and sometimes they simply shut down. Help me to break down this barrier by taking the "fear" out of science. When students are presented with interesting and exciting learning experiences, despite being a bit "scared" at first, their walls start to break down and their minds start to open up.
