My Students
"He's staring at me!" "He's making a face at me!" "He's copying my work!" Our special needs students are challenged with not always being able to tune out typical classroom distractions. The STUDENTS have asked for partitions to separate their work areas to help them focus during seat work.
Our Cross Categorical, Self Contained/ Resource Special Education classroom is situated in a large, public, urban, high poverty area school that serves students from grades Kindergarten through fifth.
Some students stay and learn in our classroom most of their school day and others come for short periods and return to their homerooms for the remainder of their day. This project is targeting our full-time, self-contained students who need extra support in focusing during individual seat work.
A recent visitor to our classroom remarked that the room is so small it felt "claustrophobic"! This factor in addition to the disruption of other students transitioning in and out of the classroom throughout the day makes it especially challenging for our full-time students to get and stay focused on classwork. As a result of various disabilities of our students, the ability to get & remain calm and focused in class can be a significant challenge easily jeopardized with the slightest distraction.
My Project
Our students recognize that they have challenges with focusing in class due to many factors and have been proactive in ASKING for these partitions. Help us help them become better able to concentrate during seat work and maximize their learning. A bonus with these partitions is that they are also white boards, which will allow students to easily work math problems without having to get scrap paper, write reminder notes to themselves, and when unable to verbalize such, they may express how they are feeling so teachers and peers may interact accordingly.
We can encourage, nurture, teach, and modify to meet our students' special needs, but if they feel they cannot fully concentrate in the classroom, they may close themselves off from classroom learning.
Ability to move desks and reorganize work areas is limited. I admire our students for recognizing this and for making a request for partitions. Unfortunately, our school does not have funding available to purchase these for our classroom. Our students are relying on your support. Thank you!
