Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Mexican Mural painting has a long tradition in the previous country of most of my students. It teaches students that people in past civilizations can be very similar to ourselves, but at times very different. It gives students the opportunity for self-reflection and global awareness.
My students are new immigrants to our country.
They bring with them an excitement and awe of learning about their new home, as well as a wealth of memories of their countries. They are very impoverished and excited about creating their own stories in art. This project of Mexican Mural painting will bring home two different cultures-their past and their present. The murals will be on display in our school for all to appreciate.
My Project
This project requires 4 mural length canvases to tell my students' stories. They will be studying the murals of Diego Rivera and artwork by Frida Kahlo. Each grade level will then design and paint their own murals with acrylic paints. Of course, in order to paint we will need brushes and mediums. This project will combine the students' ancestral culture with that of their new homeland.
This Mexican Mural project is a school-wide activity.
The students will learn about the art of their ancestors as well as learning to paint within that tradition. The completed murals will be on display for the entire school and will tell my students' stories. This project will teach about art elements, art techniques, art history, and art within other cultures. It will be an important part of our students' learning about art and culture.
