The incredible beauty of a coral reef is more appreciated if it can be seen. The students will learn about hyperbolic shapes as well as the ecology of a coral reef through creating a reef model using crochet. The reef will be displayed at the school while it is being made and after it is completed.
Our school is a public middle school in Illinois.
The students enjoy cross-curricular projects, and this project uses math, science and art. There are about 730 students in the school, including the district multi-needs classroom. We anticipate many students will participate, especially since a student can make only one small part of the reef and have it joined with the work of others.
My Project
We will never be able to take a field trip to a coral reef, but we can create a realistic model of the hyperbolic shapes found in a coral reef with yarn and crochet hooks. Students will learn a new skill, as well as understand on a much deeper level the diversity and beauty of a coral reef. The large finished project will continue to teach as it is displayed and added to over the years.
Our students do not realize the interconnectedness of the subjects they study.
Using art, math and science together in this project shows how our knowledge and experiences need to be multi-faceted.
