Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I may not ever leave where I live, but what if I could travel anywhere in the world just by reading a book. Building students' background knowledge is important in them learning about geography to gain new knowledge about the world. The imagination can take you places you never been! Are you ready?
My students are primarily second graders that are reading slightly below grade level.
Some inter city youth need to broaden their horizon. They are inquisitive and eager to learn about the world and other cultures. Students want to learn how to relate and understand people from different places. Most of the students have limited experience with traveling, cultural differences, and have limited knowledge of geography.
My Project
1. We send out plain paper dolls that we call FLAT
STANLEYS, and we send them off to visit cities all
over America and the World.
2. The person who gets a FLAT STANLEY "decorates" him.
FLAT STANLEY is "dressed" (using crayons, markers,
paints, and sometimes fabric!) in clothes that he might
wear to reflect the climate and/or activities FLAT
STANLEY might see or do there.
3. We also send out a questionnaire:
a. find out what FLAT STANLEY saw or did in that
faraway city,
b. what the climate is like,
c. the distance between that city and ours,
d. and some interesting facts about that city.
4. Then that lucky person sends those facts back to us
with the newly dressed FLAT STANLEY!
These activities include letter writing, research, reading, creative arts, interpersonal communication skills, geography, and math.
Students are learning life skills that are meaningful.
SKILLS:
1. Collect and Interpret geographic data.
2. Create and Present PowerPoint presentation to the class
that will be posted to the class blog and voice thread.
Quality work requires an authentic learning situation. Pen Pal notes for the Flat Stanley Project can provide that authentic opportunity. The students know that other students are going to be reading their notes. Having an audience is one reason for publishing writing.
