How many of you went through school reading books without any real connection to the author who wrote the book? How many of you wrote stories in school never really feeling like you might possibly be able to do something with the writing you were creating?
My school has approximately 420 students.
While several of our students are considered to be middle class, we also serve two of the most impoverished areas of our school district. Students from these two areas live among violence and lack access to quality resources for learning. Many of the students from these areas face challenges in reading. As the librarian, it is my goal to offer all students, including students of poverty, the chance to experience the joy of reading in whatever format it may take.
My Project
This project will prepare students for an upcoming visit with author, Laurel Snyder. Hearing an author talk about his or her writing is a powerful experience that inspires students to look at their own writing in a new way. They begin to see why writing matters and how it can be used in life. They gain ideas for how to get started with the creative writing process.
When an author visits, it is important for students to have a connection to that author through his/her books. I hope to start a lunch book club to begin sharing Laurel Snyder's books with multiple groups of students before and after her visit with us. We are funding her visit through profits from our book fair, but we do not have enough funding to buy multiple copies of her books for student use. Your donations can make those purchases possible.
I hope you will consider making a donation to support student reading at our school.
Your donation will connect students with quality books that will be accompanied by lively, engaging discussion and prepare students for meeting a published author.
