Can you imagine a life without color and creativity? Many of my students have never tapped into their creative element. Most feel like they cannot draw or paint; however, after basic instruction and time to experiment with various media, they begin to discover art.
Our student body is diverse--African-American, Caucasian, and Hispanic.
Most receive free or reduced-price lunch. Many students struggle to make ends meet. Charging a fee for art supplies is out of the question. This year Visual Arts was not funded in respect to art supplies. I am imploring people and businesses in our community to contribute to our need; however, last spring our town was ravaged by a powerful tornado. The needs of those who lost everything in this storm took precedence in regard to donations from the community. I have exposed my students to professors, organized workshops with local artists, and assisted some students with scholarship applications for college. They need to know that their needs are important to us as teachers. No matter what their circumstances in life, I want to help them achieve high goals, develop creative thought processes, and ultimately assist them in becoming productive citizens.
My students have never received instruction in Visual Arts until they come to my class in high school. When they enter my classroom they are excited yet intimidated. After receiving instruction they often surprise themselves with their abilities to create art. I attempt to link other subject areas to art such as color theory with science. They are exposed to the unconscious effect that color and design play in the world of advertisement. Students develop high-order thinking skills as they plan their projects. Being able to solve problems as they develop their art projects translates into other subject areas (and life in general). It is amazing to see the development that takes place in our small classroom. Sometimes students find a vent for the stresses in their lives through art.
As my students develop creative skills, they begin to develop a well-rounded life.
They realize they are capable of great things and can solve problems by learning to develop methods of analytical thinking. My desire is that my students explore, experiment and challenge themselves in all areas of their lives. Art is one means of reaching that goal. By providing paint, paper, canvases, tape paint trays and brushes they can render their ideas artistically.
