Movin' and a Groovin', Singin' and a Dancin'

My Students

When was the last time you looked at the world through the eyes of a child? Through the eyes of a child a piece of fabric could be the wings of a butterfly or a superhero's cape. Children have a unique way of viewing the world.

I am currently teaching K-5 music at a Title I school in Eastern North Carolina.

This means that a large number of my 360+ students receive government assistance. My students are anxious and eager to learn. They enjoy all aspects of music from singing to playing to listening. Additionally, many of these students are English language learners from Burma and Thailand refugee camps. For many of my students, this is their first learning experience in America. I want to provide them with an exciting and unique experience.

My Project

My students LOVE using dancing scarves! I use the scarves to teach form (ABAB...), increase the use of imagination and help the students express themselves. Additionally, primary students are often visual learners, tactile learners, and kinesthetic learners. With these props, the students will have the visual means to better assess their own movement and how it fits the particular styles of music being played. These movement activities are also an outlet in this day of more stringent classroom work and less expressive, creative time. The problem is I don't have enough large scarves for all of my students. My students end up fighting with each other for a good big scarf.
